To help explain a few terms that are used in this style of running event, here is a list of vocabulary words you may come across.
1. Shiggy- A word used for vegetation obstructions in the running path. From water to thorns, Described by a scale from 1 to 5. 1 being something like a sidewalk with no grass, and 5 being mud, brush, or other vegetation up to your shoulders. More shiggy= more fun!
2. A to A- A trail run that starts and ends in the same location.
3. A to B- A run which starts at one location and ends at another. The hare is responsible for getting people's stuff to the finish or everyone back to the start.
4. Are You?-Call to locate Hashers hunting for the correct trail.
5. Beer- A drink, or sustenance of life, without which, the average Hasher would give up Hashing altogether.
6. Circle- A shape made by the hashers themselves at the begining and end of trail so everyone may watch the entertainment in the middle.
7. Check or checkpoint- The place where the pack must look for the trail. Checkpoints are placed at intersections so that hashers must go down several roads and encounter numerous false trails before finding the correct trail.
8. Count-back- A sign which indicates one should go back a written number of marks or to the last arrow or Intersection and try some other direction.
9. Down-Down- the act of putting your adequately filled beer vessel to your mouth and finishing it. This could be accompanied by a song from the circle.
10. False Trail- just that -- the wrong way! Marked with its own symbol
11. Hare- The Hasher whose turn it was to set the run and decide what things we have to do while on trail.
12. Hareline- Schedule of Hares and the runs which they should set.
13. Hash Cash- Hasher taking your payment for beer at the run and in charge of hash related accounts.
14. Hash Trash- Weekly newsletter sent to Hashers with details of the next run.
15. Interhash- A periodic gathering of hashers from a variety of locales.
16. Live Trail- In a live run the hare marks the trail while being pursued by the pack. If caught (snared) by the other Hashers, the hare suffers great shame, public humiliation, and most likely several down-downs.
17. On-down, -in, -left, -over, -right, -up- Hash directions called while following trail.
18. On-chalk, On-flour- A call indicating that someone has actually seen the chalk or flour marks.
19. On-On-Most important Hash word after beer. Shouted when the correct trail is found.
20. Pack- Collective noun referring to the runners.
21. Snare- Occasionally a live hare will suffer the ignominious fate of being caught by a member of the pack. This known as "snaring" the hare and is a cause for great shame (and multiple Down-Downs). After any immediate shaming, the hare will be given a 5 minute head start to continue laying trail, then the haulted pack resumes pursuit.
22. Y.B.F. stands for "you've been F***ed" which indicates you are going the wrong way, go back to the last Check Point.
